A study examining 720 software projects to determine the drivers of project failure was conducted and it was found that all project failures can be linked to one cause: the delivered solution does not fit the problem.

The six main software project risks, in order of importance are: use of an inapproriate methodology, lack of customer involvement, lack of formal project management, dissimilarity to previous projects, project complexity and requirements volatility.
